Katy and a handful of men are tasked with determining what the Russians are up to, their objective being to avert potential nuclear war. The first chapter is dramatic, tense, and nerve-wracking, so I was disappointed when the story shifted from the edge-of-your-seat landing of Russian spies witnessed by two teenagers who were not where they were supposed to be to the perspective of Katy Hume, an extremely smart woman who serves in the Intentions of the Enemy Group within the Atomic Energy Commission. Published in 1956, this Cold War era novel by the author of Alas, Babylon is about the run-up to a nuclear attack and the effort by a team of brainy people to prevent the destruction of the U.S. The story eventually became exciting enough that I had trouble putting it down, thank goodness, thus ending the slump (for good, I hope). Forbidden Area by Pat Frank is the only book I managed to finish during last week's mini-slump and it's a good one but it took me the entire week to get through it because I was struggling to even talk myself into reading. ![]()

The Big Things lurk unsaid inside."" Plangent with a sad wisdom, the children's view is never oversimplified, and the adult characters reveal their frailties-and in one case, a repulsively evil power-in subtle and complex ways. Rahel notices that ""at times like these, only the Small Things are ever said. Roy captures the children's candid observations but clouded understanding of adults' complex emotional lives. Beneath the drama of a family tragedy lies a background of local politics, social taboos and the tide of history-all of which come together in a slip of fate, after which a family is irreparably shattered. In a circuitous and suspenseful narrative, Roy reveals the family tensions that led to the twins' behavior on the fateful night that Sophie drowned. Set in Kerala, India, during the late 1960s when Communism rattled the age-old caste system, the story begins with the funeral of young Sophie Mol, the cousin of the novel's protagonists, Rahel and her fraternal twin brother, Estha. With sensuous prose, a dreamlike style infused with breathtakingly beautiful images and keen insight into human nature, Roy's debut novel charts fresh territory in the genre of magical, prismatic literature. ![]() ![]() ![]() One of the world's biggest-selling thriller writers, Baldacci needs no introduction. I definitely hope that these side characters get further explored in future volumes. I enjoyed getting to see glimpses of their personalities, aspirations, families, and relationships. Are they going to become friends? More than friends? Or stay roommates and teammates who barely tolerate each other? But I'm not just interested in them-the side characters are all very interesting. I love our main characters and I just can't wait to see what happens with Nicholas and Seiji in the next volumes. ![]() Additionally, just getting to read about a whole new sport is fun. I've never fenced before but I like how some basics of fencing are explained so that we're not left in the dark. But now I have to wait for the next volume which doesn't even have a release date!! (Insert crying emoji here). I'm so glad that I found the first two volumes right before the release of the third because I didn't have to wait very long for what happened next. Fence has quickly become one of my favorite comic series. ![]() ![]() ![]() Enola’s mother’s disappearance, which I know is an overarching mystery in the series, is also often given short shrift. For example, the motive of the villain in the second book is confusingly not really discussed. ![]() Each book is short, allotted about sixty pages in graphic novel form, and because of this it felt as though the intricacies of the mysteries as well some emotional heft were left behind. However, I wondered how successfully the stories had been adapted to this format. I also liked how Sherlock and Mycroft were written, as caring brothers who are nevertheless confounded by the idea of a girl with such agency – canon confusion for Sherlock, at the very least. It’s all lovely watercolors, lending a softness to the story and the characters that contracts interestingly with the often grim story, and the author has paid attention to detail with the clothing and the surroundings. Besides, I like the art.Īnd I continued to like the art throughout. So when I saw that there was a graphic novel adaptation on NetGalley, I thought it would a fun introduction.
